Yankees hammer Bosox in opener

NEW YORK — CC Sabathia shut down the highscorin­g Red Sox, Greg Bird hit two home runs, and Aaron Judge connected off a college teammate as the New York Yankees bopped Boston 8-1 on Friday night to retake the top record in the majors.

Sabathia (5-3) helped end Boston’s four-game winning streak, less than a month from his 38th birthday. He gave up one run and six hits in seven innings.

MARLINS 8, METS 2: Sandy Alcantara allowed just one run over five innings to win his first career start as host Miami defeated New York.

NATIONALS 17, PHILLIES 7: Juan Soto hit two of Washington’s seven home runs, finishing with four hits and five RBIs, and the Nationals routed host Philadelph­ia.

BLUE JAYS 3, TIGERS 2: Marcus Stroman pitched seven innings to get his first win this season, and Toronto handed beat visiting Detroit its 10th consecutiv­e defeat.

RANGERS 11, WHITE SOX 3: Shin-Soo Choo reached base for the 41st straight game and hit one of five Texas homers as the Rangers trounced visiting Chicago.

ANGELS 7, ORIOLES 1: Mike Trout celebrated his return to center field with a solo home run and an impressive catch, and Los Angeles won at Baltimore.

BRAVES 5, CARDINALS 1: Julio Teheran pitched six scoreless innings, and Johan Camargo had a two-run double to help Atlanta win at St. Louis.

GIANTS 2, DIAMONDACK­S 1: Andrew Suarez pitched six strong innings, and Austin Slater had a pair of RBI doubles as San Francisco won at Arizona.

ROCKIES 3, DODGERS 1: Tyler Anderson tossed eight shutout innings, Nolan Arenado hit one of Colorado’s three homers, and the Rockies won at Los Angeles.

MARINERS 4, ROYALS 1: Marco Gonzales pitched a six-hitter for his first career complete game, and Seattle defeated visiting Kansas City.

CUBS 10, TWINS 6: Addison Russell hit his second career grand slam, and Chicago rallied to defeat Minnesota at Wrigley Field.

PIRATES 6, PADRES 3: Joe Musgrove pitched seven scoreless innings, and Gregory Polanco drove in a pair of runs as Pittsburgh won at San Diego.

BREWERS 8, REDS 2: Keon Broxton homered twice, leading Milwaukee to a victory over host Cincinnati.

ATHLETICS 3, INDIANS 1: Paul Blackburn tossed 61⁄3 shutout innings, and Oakland beat visiting Cleveland.
