Red-light cameras

-

Much needed

Regarding “Sugar Land should nix red-light cameras” (Page A9, Tuesday), the author wrote a strong op-ed advocating for the removal of redlight cameras in Sugar Land. Perhaps if he had experienced as many near-misses as I have with people running red, not yellow, but red lights, he would be less enthusiastic in his determination to remove the cameras.

As for the city making money from them — good for the city. Public services are always strapped for sufficient funds to pay police and fire personnel, repair bridges and roads, and put in places ways to mitigate the damage caused by events like Hurricane Harvey. Two blessings of red-light cameras: They deter people nearly running into other drivers when they run red lights and the city gets some much needed revenue.

People who don’t run red lights don’t need to worry whether there’s an active camera in place or not.
