Driver shot to death by task force ID’d

-

The driver of a stolen car shot to death by members of an undercover multi-agency task force in east Houston was identified Friday as a 17-year-old boy.

Houston police identified the teen as Jalon Johnson.

He was fatally shot while allegedly backing up and nearly running over a state trooper during his attempt to escape arrest Wednesday along the East Freeway service road to Interstate 10, officials said.

A Harris County Sheriff ’s Office deputy and two Department of Public Safety troopers opened fire on Johnson.

The teenager died face-down on the street next to the vehicle, which was believed to have been stolen Tuesday during a carjacking in Humble, according to a Houston Police Department news release.

The task force started following Johnson on Wednesday morning in Humble and conducted the traffic stop just before 6 p.m. in Houston.

Johnson allegedly rammed two police vehicles during the traffic stop, prompting the three officers to open fire at the vehicle.

During that gunfire, Johnson was struck by one bullet.

The officers administered CPR until paramedics could arrive. The teen died at the scene.

The Houston Police Department Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.
