Houston (0-0) update: Cougars will unveil a new up-tempo, spread scheme under offensive coordinato­r Kendal Briles. The Cougars would like to run 90 or more plays per game. … All-America defensive tackle Ed Oliver, a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, enters his final season after announcing in March he will skip his senior year and enter the 2019 NFL draft. The reigning Outland Trophy winner has 39.5 tackles for loss, the most ever by a defensive tackle through two seasons. … Quarterbac­k D’Eriq King enters the season as the unquestion­ed starter after taking over the job late last season. He’ll have a few new playmakers alongside him, including running back Terence Williams, a former 1,000-yard rusher at Baylor, and Raelon Singleton, the secondlead­ing receiver at Utah last season. … UH has won 30 of 41 meetings between the crosstown rivals.

Rice (1-0) update: A 23-yard field goal by Jack Fox as time expired sent the Owls to 31-28 win over Prairie View A&M in coach Mike Bloomgren’s head-coaching debut. … Following a similar script from Bloomgren’s days on the coaching staff at Stanford, the Owls ran 50 times for 310 yards. Emmanuel Esukpa carried most of the load with 32 rushes for 173 yards and touchdown. … Shawn Stankavage, a Vanderbilt transfer, will start for the second straight week but the Owls also plan to use Jackson Tyner. … Bloomgren said the Owls must be careful not to underestim­ate King’s arm, but also adds if the dualthreat QB gets loose in the open field “it’s a scary movie.” … Defensive tackle Roe Wilkins had seven tackles, including a sack and forced fumbles in Week 1. … The Owls have won the last two meetings with the Cougars at Rice Stadium, 56-42 in 2008 and 34-31 in 2010. … Asked this week about Oliver, Bloomgren said: “He has our attention.”
