BEHR’S ‘BLUEPRINT’ HAS POSITIVE, UNIVERSAL APPEAL

- By Diane Cowen

The season for launching color trends is underway, and Behr Paint has chosen “Blueprint” as its 2019 Color of the Year.

Each year, color forecasters and paint companies tap into the public’s fascination with color — which can set a mood in a room faster than anything — with a series of “Color of the Year” announcements. Behr’s Color of the Year is the latest. Earlier this year, PPG named “Night Watch,” a classic shade of green, as its bragworthy color.

Behr’s “Blueprint” — available exclusively at Home Depot — is a warm, midtone blue that’s softer than navy and universally appealing.

Color forecasters often pick colors that reflect the mood of the world, our universal needs or, looking forward, offer hope. When nature seemed a big influence, green burst onto the scene.

In 2016, Pantone picked two — “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity” — for their soft, calming nature, then followed the next year with the cheery “Greenery.” Blues, violets and other deep hues have been touted, though none seem to dominate any home’s color palette. Erika Woelfel, Behr’s vice president of color and creative services, touted its color choice as a foundation for its broader, 15-shade Color Trends palette for 2019: “Much like the sketches builders rely on to bring an architectural design to life, ‘Blueprint’ lays a foundation for consumers to make their unique vision a reality. This universally appealing hue provides a steady stream of positivity and is poised to be an instant classic for years to come.”

Not sure what to do with “Blue-

print” in your home? Behr offers these ideas:

Use it in a blue-teal-gray scheme, layering light and dark blues on walls, cabinets, furniture and other décor. Try “Blueprint” with “Watery,” “Antiqua,” “Dark Navy” and “Blue Metal.”

Jewel tones in 2019 work well with earthy tones such as mauve, dark green or warm gold. Try “Blueprint” with “Ecological,” “Amber Autumn,” “Raisin in the Sun” and “Vine Leaf.”

If your home is tied to a gray palette, pair it with “Blueprint” and “Elephant Skin,” “Mars Red” and “Kindling.”

Take it softer with powder blue, blush peach and tinted lilac as accents: add “Cotton Grey,” “Standing Ovation” and “Sand Dance.”
