A man who allegedly exchanged fire with deputies Tuesday was found dead after an hourslong SWAT scene in the Sugar Land area.

After more than five hours of trying to contact the man, the SWAT team made entry into the man’s home and found him dead in an upstairs bedroom, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said.

Authorities said the man, who they identified as 41year-old Serik Olivares, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies received a call about a disturbance around 5 a.m. at the home in the 3700 block of Lakeridge Canyon Drive in Orchard Lake Estates. A woman said the father of her child was trying to kill her, the sheriff said.

When two deputies arrived, Olivares shot one of them inside his home, authorities said. Both of the deputies exchanged gunfire with him, Nehls said.

The deputy, 7-year veteran J. Bulman, was struck by gunfire and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was shot through his calf and grazed in the chin twice. He’s being assessed for surgery and is in good spirits, according to the sheriff.

Other deputies later arrived and tried to gain access to the home, where Olivares lived with his parents. His mother and his child were still inside. The man again fired at the deputies, but no one was hit, the sheriff said.

The woman who called 911 and Olivares’ father escaped from the home, according to the sheriff. Olivares’ mother and 2-yearold child walked out of the house safely around 8 a.m.

The SWAT team eventually deployed gas canisters inside the home and didn’t get a response. They entered the home and found the man dead.

“What a terribly sad situation,” Nehls said. “I am grateful that the suspect’s family is safe and unharmed and that our deputy is going to make a full recovery.”

The 911 caller and Olivares had shared custody of the child. Yi-Chin Lee contributed to this report.
