-

COMMERCE — Former Rice coach David Bailiff on Sunday was named the new coach at Texas A&MCommerce.

Bailiff replaces Colby Carthel, who led the Lions to the 2017 NCAA Division II national championship and last week became the coach at Stephen F. Austin.

“It's the first job I've had where you've got to look at the blueprint and continue building the momentum on something great (Carthel) already got started,” Bailiff said.

Bailiff was the Owls’ coach for 11 seasons until he was fired after going 1-11 this. He was Texas State's coach from 2004-06 before going to Rice, where he had two 10-win seasons and twice was Conference USA coach of the year. The Owls in 2013 won their first outright conference title in 56 years.

Murray issues apology on tweets

Newly minted Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray apologized for anti-gay tweets posted to his Twitter account several years ago, when he was 14 and 15.

The Oklahoma quarterback tweeted : “I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15. I used a poor choice of word that doesn't reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.”

The tweets have since been deleted from the account of the 21-year-old Murray, who won college football's most prestigious individual award Saturday night over Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins.

Murray, a junior from Allen, signed a $4.66 million contract with the Oakland Athletics after he was selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft in June, and this season may be his last in college football.

Odds and ends

Jim Harbaugh insists he is staying at Michigan. Responding to speculation that he is returning to the NFL, the former San Francisco 49ers coach told ESPN he is not going anywhere. “This is a choreographed message that comes up at this time every year before signing day,” Harbaugh told ESPN. “It's people spreading messages to further their own personal agenda. But I'm on record right here, right now: I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying at Michigan. We have big plans here, and there's a lot we want to accomplish.” Former Ohio State star receiver and Fox Sports analyst Cris Carter has said Harbaugh is a potential candidate to lead the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns. … Iowa State and coach Matt Campbell agreed to a contract extension through 2024. The Cyclones announced Campbell's extension, saying they will allocate an extra $1 million for assistant coaches and support staff. Terms of Campbell's new deal were not disclosed. Campbell and Iowa State agreed to a six-year, $22.5 million contract last November. The Cyclones (8-4) have posted back-to-back eight-win seasons, and their six victories in the Big 12 Conference were the most in school history.
