UVA wins big for Bennett’s 300th victory

CHARLOTTES­VILLE, Va. — Kyle Guy made seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points as No. 4 Virginia beat Marshall 100-64 on Monday, giving Tony Bennett his 300th career coaching victory.

Guy also grabbed a career-best eight rebounds while Ty Jerome and Jay Huff added 14 points each for the Cavaliers (12-0). Virginia led 50-25 at halftime, then scored the first 10 points after the break, with Guy scoring eight of them, to remove any possible suspense.

Jon Elmore scored 14 points but missed 14-of-17 shots for Marshall (7-6). The Thundering Herd shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) overall but became just the second team to score as many as 60 points against Virginia, which leads the nation by allowing just 50.3 points per game. Maryland was the other in a 76-71 loss on Nov. 28.

The victory kept alive Virginia's best start to a season since the 2014-15 team won its first 19 games.

GONZAGA 89 CAL ST.-BAKERSFIEL­D 54

Rui Hachimura scored 22 points to help the No. 7 Bulldogs beat the to wrap up the non-conference season for both teams.

Brandon Clarke and Zach Norvell Jr. each scored 16 points for Gonzaga (13-2), which has easily won four straight games after losing to No. 3 Tennessee and No. 15 North Carolina to fall from the top spot in The AP Top 25. Jeremy Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

SAM HOUSTON ST. 84 TEXAS LUTHERAN 54

Zach Nutall scored 12 points and RJ Smith added 11 with seven rebounds to help the Bearkats beat the Bulldogs.

Texas Lutheran made 10 of their first 15 field-goal attempts to open an 11point lead before Sam Houston State (5-8) scored the next 14 points, as TLU missed 11 consecutiv­e shots, to take a three-point lead early in the second half.

ALFORD FIRED BY UCLA

Steve Alford was fired as the Bruins’ basketball coach after six seasons, with UCLA mired in a four-game skid that included losses at home to Belmont and Liberty.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero said that assistant Murry Bartow will serve as interim coach through the end of the season.

Women RUTGERS 73, MARYLAND 65

Stasha Carey scored 18 points, Ciani Cryor had 12 points and 11 assists, and the Scarlet Knights used an exceptiona­l rebounding performanc­e to upset the Terrapins.

Charise Wilson and Noga Peleg Pelc added 10 points each for the Scarlet Knights (9-3, 2-0 Big Ten), with all of Peleg Pelc's coming during the fourth quarter.

Taylor Mikesell scored 18 points and Kaila Charles added 15 for Maryland, which lost for the first time since the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament. The defeat comes two days after the Terrapins (12-1, 1-1) trailed following three quarters at Penn State, only to close the game on a 21-4 run.

UT-RIO GRANDE VALLEY 37

Lauren Cox scored 17 points to lead seven players in double figures for the Lady Bears in a win over the Vaqueros.

Baylor (9-1) hadn't played since a 68-63 road loss Dec. 15 at No. 6 Stanford, but showed no ill effects from the time off as it shot 63 percent in the first quarter to race out to a 31-6 lead in their final game before facing Connecticu­t.
