GOLDEN GLOBES: Queen rules the night
Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet was a noted change from last year’s somber, yet powerful, style event in which stars wore all black in solidarity with #MeToo victims of sexual assault and abuse.
This year, celebrities arrived at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in bold, bright colors, from vivid green to icy blue. Although there was little talk about the Time’s Up movement, stars still wore “Times Up X 2” ribbons and bracelets on the red carpet.
“Crazy Rich Asian” star Gemma Chan was the belle of the ball in a petrol blue Valentino haute couture gown. The dress had a voluminous skirt and train, slit to reveal short shorts. It looked elegant, yet wearable. The London-born actress has captivated the attention of style-watchers after her portrayal of the super-rich, pedigreed Astrid in the movie.
Also in blue was Lady Gaga in a Valentino strapless gown with a massive train, a 20carat Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace and Giuseppe Zanotti platforms. Her hair was dyed the same color, prompting the Twitterverse to dub her look Smurf-inspired. But for the “Star Is Born” actress, the look was tame in comparison to her attention-seeking theatrical looks — like the Victorian Alexander McQueen gown she wore at the London film premiere. On Sunday, Lady Gaga praised her “Star Is Born” co-star Bradley Cooper, saying, he “taught me how to be really present on set.”
“Black Panther” star Lupita Nyong’o arrived, with co-stars Michael B. Jordan and Danai Gurira, wearing a Calvin
Klein By Appointment chain fringe gown with a metallic silver-box clutch. Nyong’o brings magic to the red carpet with every stroll.
“Glow” actress
Alison Brie wore a pale-blue custom Vera Wang with a black,
silver bandeau. “This year I’m in a pretty dress,” Brie said.
White dresses also made a statement. Jamie Lee Curtis chose an all-white, long-sleeve gown with high slit and short platinum locks to match. Dakota Fanning arrived wearing a Giorgio Armani strapless white gown, while award-show host Sandra Oh channeled Old Hollywood in a white draped Versace gown and a wavy bob.
The Golden Globes also brought a sea of green. Catherine Zeta-Jones dazzled in an Elie Saab gown with a high slit. “Crazy Rich Asians” star Michelle Yeoh chose an emerald leather gown with the emerald ring she wore in the movie. Taraji P. Henson wore a plush, velvet green gown with a plunging neckline and a silver choker. It was a look that showed off her toned physique. But the deep V is getting to be boring. Henson’s podium partner, Gina Rodriguez, took the plunge in a Reem Acra gown dripping with Chopard diamonds.
Nicole Kidman stunned in a skin-tight, custom burgundy sequined Michael Kors gown that only a few could wear, even in Hollywood. As well, Charlize Theron chose a classic formfitting Dior. Julia Roberts pulled off a half gown/half pants combo with style.
The few misses of the night included the Monique Lhuillier strapless noir gown worn by Heidi Klum, who could have pulled off the look with a more prim updo. The tousled beach waves didn’t fit the dress. Anne Hathaway’s Elie Saab V-neck leopard-print gown, with its mix of sequins and organza, seemed more fitting for the edgier Grammy awards than the refined Golden Globes.
The cut-out look hasn’t fizzled yet, as demonstrated by Thandie Newton, Lucy Liu and Rosamund Pike, whose black Givenchy Couture cut-out gown was oddly paired with a silver jacket.
