No. 16 Buffalo improves to 17-1

AMHERST, N.Y. — CJ Massinburg ended a fourgame slump by scoring 31 points and leading No. 16 Buffalo to a 77-65 victory over Eastern Michigan on Friday night.

Nick Perkins scored 21 as the Bulls (17-1, 5-0 MidAmerica­n Conference) extended what has become their best start in school history.

Massinburg, Buffalo’s leading scorer, had combined to score just 52 points in his last four games.

MARYLAND 75, OHIO ST. 61

Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 20 points as the No. 19 Buckeyes won at Columbus, Ohio, for their seventh consecutiv­e victory.

Bruno Fernando added 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and had 15 rebounds for the Terrapins (16-3, 7-1 Big Teneach scored 11, and Jalen Smith had 10.

Maryland was 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from 3-point range.

C.J. Jackson scored 15 points for Ohio State (12-5, 2-4), which lost its fourth in a row.

VILLANOVA 85, XAVIER 75

Phil Booth scored 22 points, and Collin Gillespie added 18 as the 22ndranked Wildcats beat the Musketeers at Philadelph­ia for their sixth win in a row.

Eric Paschall added 17 points and eight rebounds for Villanova (14-4, 5-0 Big East.

Tyrique Jones led Xavier (11-8, 3-3) with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

UCONN SANCTIONS ITSELF

Connecticu­t announced that it would self-impose penalties, including the loss of a scholarshi­p for the 2019-20 season, for violations of NCAA rules by its basketball program under former coach Kevin Ollie. UConn fired Ollie after a 14-18 season a year ago and later detailed numerous NCAA violations it said were committed during his tenure. In addition to reducing scholarshi­ps next season from 13 to 12, the school said it will enforce a one-week ban on unofficial visits during the 2018-2019 academic year; enforce a one-week ban on recruiting communicat­ions during the current academic year; reduce by one the number of allowable official visits this year; reduce from 130 to 126 the number of allowable recruiting days; pay a $5,000 fine to the NCAA; and prohibit student-managers from attending allowable pickup games involving team members.

Women OREGON 77, ARIZONA ST. 71

Sabrina Ionescu scored 31 points as the No. 5 Ducks fought off a late 3-point barrage and outlasted the 19th-ranked Sun Devils at Eugene, Ore.

Maite Cazorla added 16 points, and Ruthy Hebard had 14 for Oregon (16-1, 5-0 Pac-12), who won its ninth game in a row.

Kianna Ibis had 22 points to lead Arizona State (12-5, 3-3.

STANFORD 91 WASHINGTON 54

Alanna Smith scored 11 of her 27 points in the third period and also grabbed 13 rebounds as the sixth-ranked Cardinal won at Stanford, Calif.

Kiana Williams scored 22 points and knocked down four of 13 3-pointers by Stanford (15-1, 5-0 Pac-12), which beat Washington for an 18th consecutiv­e time at Maples Pavilion.

BIBBY OUT FOR SEASON

Mississipp­i State forward Chloe Bibby will miss the rest of the season because of a left knee injury. Bibby fell awkwardly after pivoting during the opening minute of Thursday night’s game against South Carolina, clutching her leg in obvious pain. She had to be helped off the floor and did not return.
