Urban Harvest fruit tree sale features plants targeted to area

- By Melissa Aguilar

Urban Harvest hosts its 19th annual Fruit Tree Sale on Saturday at Sawyer Yards.

This is the place to find fruit trees suited to the Houston area — and some unusual varieties, including the Japanese plum loquat, the Sanguinelli blood orange and the dwarf Namwah banana. It’s the largest single-day fruit tree sale in the country.

Namwah is a dwarf banana variety that reaches a mature height of only 8 to 10 feet. The plant is fast-growing, cold and heat tolerant, and suitable for container gardening. Despite its short stature, the Namwah tree produces large bunches of sweet lady-finger bananas, which are prized in Indonesia. The fruit has supreme flavor with a creamy texture, raw or cooked.

In the Green Thumbs Education Pavilion, sponsored by Kroger, kids and adults can participate in environmental and nutritional activities. The event, which also includes food trucks and live music, is a fundraiser for Urban Harvest and benefits its outdoor classrooms at schools, community gardens, affordable organic gardening classes and the Urban Harvest Saturday Farmers Market.
