Boys
Sahvir Wheeler, Houston Christian Notable: Wheeler scored 19 points in a 69-64 win over Episcopal as the Mustangs won their second consecutive SPC state championship. He also had 12 points and 12 assists in an 81-54 semifinal win over Oak Ridge. What coach Ron Crandall said: “He’s one of the most incredible players and kids I’ve ever coached. Resilient, strives for excellence every day. Whatever you do, don’t doubt that kid because he has a will, not only for himself, that he’s able to bring out in his entire team.” Other nominees
Ky Blodget, Katy Taylor: He had 25 points in an 85-62 win over Katy, securing a playoff berth for the Mustangs for the first time since 2015. Mason Williams, Lake
Creek: Williams scored a 480.75 to win the Class 5A 1-meter diving state championship — the first state title in any event for Lake Creek. Marcus Molina, Deer Park: Molina took home the Steve Bledsoe Memorial Award at the Brown Relays after victories in the 100-meter race and 200meter race.
Girls
Jordan Neely, The Woodlands
Notable: Neely hit .470 in five games at the NFCA Leadoff Softball Classic in Bryan. She had three straight games with a home run and added two triples in a victory over Ridge Point in the thirdplace game. What coach Tim
Borths said: “She calls all of our pitches. We trust her a lot. The offensive production she’s had to start off the season has been phenomenal, just the icing on the cake with what she’s able to do defensively.” Other nominees
Helena Johnson, Westside: Johnson had 21 points, all on 3-pointers, in a 68-44 win over Kempner. Kaitlynn Sims, Montgomery: She won the 500-yard freestyle, took silver in the 200-yard freestyle and contributed on two relay gold medals to lead the Lady Bears’ first Class 5A state swimming championship. Emma Stephenson, Stratford: Stephenson set the Class 6A 50-yard freestyle state record with a time of 22.67 seconds for her second consecutive title. Peter Scamardo
