Migrant dies after arrest, officials say
EL PASO — Immigration officials say a Mexican migrant died Monday after his arrest near an urban border crossing.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the death on Tuesday, saying agents arrested the 40-year-old man early Sunday for re-entering the country illegally. His identity was not released.
He died at an El Paso hospital after receiving treatment for flu-like symptoms and liver and kidney failure. He’s the fourth migrant to die in CBP custody since December, including an 8-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl.
Border Patrol Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said this month that the system “is well beyond capacity and remains at the breaking point.”
ACLU Border Rights Center Director Astrid Dominguez said in a statment, “A transparent and independent investigation into the conditions at CBP detention facilities and its medical care practices is needed immediately.”
No injuries reported in school shooting
A man opened fire at a Houston charter school Tuesday in what appeared to be a domestic incident, officials said.
No injuries were reported in the shooting at Houston Can Academy North campus, 3400 block of Hardy Street, officials said. The gunman remained at large.
The gunman and his girlfriend had just arrived at the school about 8:30 a.m. as a young family member was being dropped off for the day, officials said. The suspect and one of the other family members got into a dispute, at which point the suspect allegedly pulled a gun and shot toward a male family member.
Officers have identified the suspect and are working with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to determine charges.
Brothers charged in drive-by shooting
Two brothers accused of shooting a pregnant woman fleeing gunfire near a bus stop are now charged in the attack, deputies say.
Kwan Tayes, 21, and Nickolaus Collins, 19, are each facing a felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge in connection with the shooting, according to the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office. The two are brothers, police say.
The woman, 20, was in a business on Ella Boulevard near Barren Springs Drive around 9:45 p.m. last Thursday when a green SUV drove by with guns firing out of the window, according to court documents. As the woman tried to run away from the gunfire, she was shot several times in the back, according to investigators.
The woman was rushed to Houston Northwest Medical Center in serious condition but has since improved, deputies say. They also said the unborn baby is in “excellent” health.
Court documents detail that a witness who saw the green SUV after the shooting helped sheriff ’s investigators identify both Tayes and Collins.
Both were arrested Monday at a home on Aldine Mail Route, according to the sheriff ’s office.
