Café Bustelo
Latin coffee shop pops up in shipping container in Montrose
THE CONCEPT
A temporary java joint in Montrose from a New York-born coffee company that’s popular with the Latin community. The pop-up will be open through May 25.
THE SPACE
A canary-yellow, 8-by-40-foot shipping container fashioned into a two-level café with a retail area inside and seating out front and on the roof beneath umbrellas.
THE FOOD
Empanadas (beef, chicken, spinach and cheese) and pastelitos (cheese, guava, beef ) are served, as well as fresh fuit.
THE DRINKS
Coffee and espresso drinks — cafecito, colada, cortadito and café con leche — are available along with juices, teas, soda and sparkling water.
THE WORD
Houston was chosen as the first city for a multicity outreach to bring Café Bustelo awareness to key cities. “Houston is an important market for us. The brand lives and breathes Latin culture,” said Eduardo Merino, senior brand manager. “There’s diversity in every corner in Houston, and we want to be a part of that diversity.”
ONE MORE THING
A portion of coffee sales will be donated to MECA Houston (Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts) and HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities). Café Bustelo also intends to engage with local artists and offer activities and programming during its Houston run.
