1887: Founded as The Ohio Oil Company 1911: Retained as part of Standard Oil until the Standard breakup 1930: Started “Marathon” brand name 1962: Became Marathon Oil Company 1990: Moved headquarters from Ohio to Houston 2002: Spilt from U.S. Steel and became standalone company 2011: Spun off refining business as separate Marathon Petroleum Corp.
