Diaz, Altuve getting closer to returning

-

BOSTON — Two hampered second basemen are nearing returns to the field for the Astros.

Though he “probably” will not play against the White Sox on Monday to open a 10-game homestand at Minute Maid Park, Aledmys Diaz will undergo a full workout prior to the game and could return to the lineup either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Diaz did not require a stint on the injured list after exiting Friday’s 3-1 win against the Red Sox with a grade one strain of his left hamstring. A more concrete determination of his availability against the White Sox will come after Monday’s workout.

“At this point, until he gets a little more active, we’re not going to know,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “But we’re still confident we’re on time and on our plan to get him up and running on Tuesday.”

Diaz was thrust into everyday action after Jose Altuve had a similar strain of his left hamstring. Altuve’s was severe enough to warrant placement on the injured list.

The six-time All-Star second baseman ran for the first time during his rehab on Saturday and will progress to more aggressive baseball activities when the team returns to Houston. He will not be activated Tuesday —

the first day he’s eligible to return from the IL — and Hinch all but confirmed Sunday that Altuve will require a brief minor league rehab assignment.

Altuve’s most logical destination would be Class AAA Round Rock, which is playing at Dell Diamond through May 24. Class AA Corpus Christi does not return home from its current road trip until May 23.

In the duo’s absence, Yuli Gurriel started a second

straight game at second base in Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Red Sox, while Tyler White manned first. Tony Kemp can also play second base if the need arises.
