Texas men win national title
Texas overcame the midseason firing of its coach to upset defending national champion Wake Forest at Orlando, Fla., to win the school’s first men’s tennis national championship.
After losing the doubles point, the Longhorns needed to win four of the six singles to take home the title.
No 1 singles Christian Sigsgaard upset Wake Forest’s Borna Gojo 6-3, 6-4. Rodrigo Banzer won for Texas at No. 6 singles, followed by Collin Markes winning his match at No. 5 singles, putting Texas up 3-1.
Texas No. 2 singles Yuya Ito clinched the national title for the Longhorns, beating the defending NCAA singles champion Petros Chrysochos in three sets.
The team came into the NCAA Championship as the No. 2 seed after losing head coach Michael Center, who was fired in March after being indicted in a college admissions scandal.
Assistant coach Bruce Berque was named interim head coach.
