Palpable fear about census

- Rusti Stover, Houston

Regarding “Halting census ploy” (Editorial, Friday): No matter how the fight about the citizenship-status question on the 2020 Census ends, it was already too late when President Trump proposed the question. I live in southwest Houston, surrounded daily by immigrant friends and acquaintances from a lot of Spanishspeaking countries, and many I know have been here legally for a great number of years, waiting to apply for citizenship. But I do know one thing: None of

them will ever send in that mailed form or answer the door to a census taker.

The fear of our government using the form to somehow deport them has been solidly planted, as they believe their legal status might somehow be compromised by this president of the United States who I believe would love to rid our country of all immigrants who do not fit his ideal of who should be allowed in the country.

We might as well forget the Census next year. There’s no way it will be anywhere near accurate, not in Houston, not in Texas and not in any other place with a large Hispanic population.
