Caserio top GM candidate if Pats allow talks
The Texans are still waiting for a response from New England after making a formal request Friday night to interview Nick Caserio for their vacant general manager job.
Caserio, the Patriots’ director of player personnel who’s been in the New England organization since 2001, is the Texans’ top choice to replace Brian Gaine, who was fired Friday afternoon.
Caserio, 43, was the Texans’ first choice to replace former general manager Rick Smith in January 2018, but Belichick denied permission for him to interview, and Gaine got the job.
At New England, Caserio worked with coach Bill O’Brien for five years (2007-2011) and with new executive vice president of team development Jack Easterby for six years (2013-2018).
Caserio, who has been the Patriots’ director of player personnel since 2008, serves as coach Bill Belichick’s right-hand man in several capacities. He coached offense under Belichick between two stints in personnel, oversees scouting and still plays a role on the coaching staff. He’s a former quarterback from John Carroll University.
The Texans interviewed two candidates over the weekend — both former general managers — Ray Farmer and Martin Mayhew.
Farmer and Mayhew both satisfy the Rooney Rule that says teams must interview minority candidates.
Farmer, 44, spent seven years at Kansas City as director of player personnel and one as the Browns' assistant general manager before being promoted. He was fired after two years as the Browns' general manager after the NFL fined the team $250,000 for sending text messages to coaches during games, a violation of league rules.
Mayhew, a former GM in Detroit, spent the last two years as the 49ers’ senior personnel assistant under general manager John Lynch. He was promoted to vice president of player personnel this year.
If they’re unable to get Caserio, the Texans are expected to interview more candidates.
Until a new GM is hired, Texans CEO Cal McNair named Chris Olsen as interim head of football operations.
