TORRES NAMED ALL-STAR
Tampa Bay Rays 2B Brandon Lowe was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a bruised right shin and will not play in next week’s All-Star Game.
Yankees 2B Gleyber Torres was named to replace Lowe, who was added to the AL All-Star team Wednesday.
Lowe, hitting .276 with teambest 16 homers and 49 RBIs, is hopeful of returning right after the All-Star break. He took the spot of Los Angeles Angels infielder Tommy La Stella as an injury replacement and still plans to attend the All-Star Game in Cleveland.
Torres, who is hitting .294 with 19 homers and 50 RBIs, was named an All-Star last season but couldn’t play because of a right hip injury.
The All-Star switch from Lowe to Torres came hours before the AL East-leading Yankees and second-place Rays started a four-game series.
DETROIT TIGERS
OF JaCoby Jones was placed on the 10-day IL with a lower back strain and was replaced on the roster by OF Victor Reyes, who was recalled from Class AAA Toledo.
Jones left the first game of Wednesday’s twinbill in the fifth inning with back spasms. Manager Ron Gardenhire said an MRI exam showed no structural damage.
The 27-year old-Jones is batting .244 with nine homers and 23 RBIs in 69 games.
PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
The club placed reliever Juan Nicasio on the 10-day IL with a strained left groin.
Manager Gabe Kapler said Nicasio’s strain is “pretty mild” and that the RHP needed the break because he also has been feeling tightness in his quadriceps.
Nicasio has a 5.24 ERA with one save in 32 appearances this season.
SEATTLE MARINERS
The team acquired RHP Matt Wisler from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations. He was placed on the Mariners’ lone open spot on the 40-man roster. He is expected to report to Seattle in the next day or two. The Mariners will have to remove someone from the 25-man roster to make room Wisler, who is out of minor league options.
Wisler, 26, was designated for assignment by San Diego on Saturday. He’d made 21 relief appearances with the Padres this season, posting a 2-2 record with a 5.28 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 10 walks. The plan is to use Wisler as a multi-inning reliever. He hasn’t pitched in a game since June 23.
In parts of five MLB seasons, he’s made 106 appearances, including 49 starts, posting a 18-25 record with a 5.15 ERA.
