UH quarterback King eager to get started
NEWPORT, R.I. — University of Houston quarterback D’Eriq King said he is “itching” to begin preseason camp after having last season end prematurely with a knee injury.
“I’m ready to get back out there and prove (I’m healthy),” King said Monday at the kickoff event for the American Athletic Conference at Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina.
Eight months since suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee on a noncontact play, King said he is completely healed and had no limitations during the Cougars’ summer workout program. King, a senior from Manvel, is coming off a breakout season that included an AAC singleseason record 50 total touchdowns.
“I’m itching to get back out there because of how the season ended last year,” King said. “I feel great. I’m doing everything in summer workouts, squatting, cutting, running full speed. I feel really good physically.”
King said he also is motivated to get the taste of UH’s final loss last season — a 70-14 embarrassment to Army in the Armed Forces Bowl.
“Since I’ve been here, this is the biggest chip on our shoulder,” King said.
Grad transfer Fox to join roster
Although there has been no official announcement, Houston is expected to add Northwestern linebacker Nathan Fox to its roster.
As a graduate transfer, Fox will be eligible to play immediately. Fox played in three games last season before suffering an injury. He becomes the 14th defensive player since new coach Dana Holgorsen arrived in January.
What’s a clambake without lobster?
Lobster was on the menu for Monday’s New England-style clambake.
How did UH players fare in what unofficially has become a see-how-much you-can-eat challenge?
Senior punter Dane Roy ate two lobsters, while 300-pound-plus offensive lineman Josh Jones and defensive lineman Aymiel
Fleming each had one. Quarterback D’Eriq King took a photo with one.
“It had it’s ups-anddowns. It took a lot of work to get to the meat,” Fleming said. “It was seasoned naturally. I like the Zatarain’s seasoning. I like to smell the spice.”
Fleming said his mistake was eating appetizers.
“I had the finger foods, that’s what it was,” he said.
King on watch list for Maxwell
UH quarterback D’Eriq King was named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is presented annually to college football’s top player.
