After fleeing a traffic stop, 2 die in gunfight with deputy
Two people were killed in a shootout early Tuesday with a Brazoria County Sheriff ’s Office deputy during a traffic stop, according to authorities.
The deputy tried pulling over the driver of a 2015 Kia sedan for an unspecified traffic offense along Texas 288 Business near Lake Jackson around 12:30 a.m. when the motorist bolted, sheriff ’s spokesman Lt. Varon Snelgrove said. The driver pulled into a driveway outside a home with the deputy behind them.
As the deputy was getting out of his patrol vehicle, someone inside the Kia opened fire on him and struck his patrol vehicle, Snelgrove said. The deputy returned fire, and the two people who were inside the car were killed. Authorities identified the pair as 36year-old Brandon Ray Stansel and 40-year-old Kelly Danielle Brumley.
Investigators found two weapons with Stansel, who had outstanding warrants from Richwood Police Department for possession of a firearm by a felon and tampering with a government record for allegedly altering the number on a gun, Snelgrove said.
Stansel’s criminal history dates back to at least more than a decade with several felony and misdemeanor arrests in the Houston area. He was convicted of theft in 2005 and of theft of a firearm in 2009 in Brazoria County, court records show.
He was also convicted of theft of a firearm in 2006 in Galveston County.
According to records, Brumley also had several brushes with law enforcement for misdemeanor offenses. In Brazoria County, she was sentenced in 2003 to two years for theft.
The deputy who opened fire has been with the sheriff’s office for about four years, Snelgrove said. He was hurt during the incident but the nature of his injury was not known. He was treated at the scene, the spokesman continued.
The shooting is being investigated by the sheriff's office and the Brazoria County District Attorney's Office.
