Astros (64-37) update: The three-game weekend sweep of the Rangers upped Houston’s home record to 36-14 (.720), putting it way ahead of the pace of the previous franchise best (55-26, .679) set in 1980 and matched in 1998. … With Sunday’s three-hit game that included two home runs, Michael Brantley has an AL-best 40 multi-hit games this season. He’s hitting .347 at Minute Maid Park. … With each victory, Verlander continues to advance on the all-time list. On Friday, his 216th career win tied him with Curt Schilling, Charlie Hough and Wilbur Cooper for 85th all-time. The next one will pull him even with Mickey Lolich and Freddie Fitzsimmon­s for 83rd.

A’s (57-43) update: This is a significan­t series in regard to Oakland’s AL West title hopes. The A’s, who despite Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Twins have won eight of their last 10, stand 6½ games behind the Astros. They hold the second AL wild-card spot, a game behind the Indians and a game ahead of the Rays. … Liam Hendricks, who has been the closer since Blake Treinen went on the IL, had a scoreless streak of 202⁄3 innings until blowing a save and taking the loss in Sunday’s defeat. … Over his last 30 games, All-Star Matt Chapman is slashing .336/.418/.654 with six homers and 23 RBIs. The 2018 Gold Glover also leads all major league third basemen with 11 defensive runs saved.
