What to pack when going to a festival

- BY JAN BURNS CORRESPONDENT

Attending a festival can be awesome. Before heading out to one, be sure you have everything you need to help you enjoy it much as possible.

Dress appropriately. Wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat will offer protection from the blazing sun. Use sunscreen and reapply as needed. Also, bring an umbrella or poncho if possible rain is in the forecast.

There’s usually plenty of walking and/or standing at a festival. Because of this, you will thank yourself later if you wear comfortable shoes.

To avoid getting dehydrated, either take water or carry in an empty water bottle and fill it up inside. Alternately, choose electrolyte-rich sports drinks. If festival rules allow it, bring an easy-to-transport cooler to keep your drinks cold.

Pack some snacks, which will help you keep your energy up. Low-maintenance zero-prep snacks like fresh fruit, trail mix, or cereal bars are good choices.

Antibacterial hand lotion and/or cleansing wipes will help you feel fresh and avoid germs at the same time.

Stash your festival tickets, ID, and money in a backpack. That will free up your hands for anything else you plan to carry. You can also pack a small battery-powered fan or water spritzer to keep cool.

An external phone charger will allow you to keep your phone charged and usable, so you will be able to keep in touch with others in your group.

If you have kids, be aware that some festivals do not allow strollers, because they can cause problems in congested areas.

It’s not a good idea to bring pets to a festival. It might be crowded, which might stress your animal. Also, not everyone may be comfortable around your pet.

Most festivals have websites which give detailed information about what festival goers can bring in, and what not to bring. Check them out before heading out to enjoy all the fun.
