Pumpkin patch season brings family-friendly fun
With fall just around the corner, area pumpkin patches are getting ready to open their doors for the season, each with their own unique offerings, and all within easy reach from Houston.
Blessington Farms in Simonton opens for fall on Sept. 21 through Nov. 17. In addition to its pumpkin patch, guests can meet the farm’s animals, and fishing is also available. Friday, Saturday and Sunday the farms are open to the public, while Tuesday through Thursday is for field trips only. Froberg’s Farm in Alvin will present its Fall Festival starting Sept. 28 through Nov. 3. Attractions include a giant corn maze, flower garden, corn cannon, plastic duck races, lighted hayride, mining sluice and Berry Fun Land, a playground built by the Froberg family. Oil Ranch in Hockley will host its annual Scarecrow Festival and Pumpkin Patch seven days a week beginning in October. Visitors can expect thousands of pumpkins piled high for photo opportunities and more than 85 uniquely dressed scarecrows. Annual favorites are the pirate and train engineer. Dewberry Farm in Brookshire opens for the season on Sept. 28 through Nov. 10. The farm offers more than 50 attractions, including its pumpkin patch, 8-acre corn maze, pig races, barnyard, children’s farm playground and 26-foot tall slide.
For those planning to pick out pumpkins for cooking, Dewberry Farm recommends going for those labeled as “sugar pumpkins” or “pie pumpkins.” These varieties are sweeter and have smoother flesh versus the larger carving pumpkins with stringy, less flavorful meat.
