Brown: No regrets over 2-point try

-

North Carolina coach Mack Brown said he does not regret going for a failed two-point conversion late in an attempt to upset thenNo. 1 Clemson on Saturday.

The Tigers’ defense stopped quarterback Sam Howell’s keeper with 1:17 left to win 21-20 at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Brown said he would “absolutely, 100 percent” play for the lead if he had it to do over again instead of kicking the extra point to force overtime with a “depleted” defense against the reigning national champions.

The 68-year-old College Football Hall of Fame member said he wasn’t worried about criticism, saying there was “freedom to be this age and to have won this many games and be able to do what you think is best for your team.”

Clemson dropped to No. 2 after the close call against the Tar Heels.

In other news:

• Purdue got a double dose of bad news. Starting quarterback Elijah Sindelar will miss multiple weeks after undergoing surgery for a broken left collarbone, and All-America receiver Rondale Moore will sit out Saturday’s game at No. 12 Penn State with a left leg injury. “It’s too early to tell,” coach Jeff Brohm said when asked if Sindelar’s injury would end his season.

• California will be without starting quarterback Chase Garbers indefinitely because of an apparent shoulder injury he suffered in Friday’s loss to Arizona State. Garbers was scrambling when he fell on his throwing arm late in the second quarter against the Sun Devils. Coach Justin Wilcox declined to give the nature or severity of Garbers injury, saying only that it is an upper body injury.
