Benjamin Moore names ‘First Light’ its color of 2020.
“First Light” — a pink-beige alternative to white — is Benjamin Moore’s 2020 Color of the Year.
The paint company, often favored by architects and interior designers, has chosen the soft rosy color to usher in a new decade and “a new dawn of idealism, design and living,” said Benjamin Moore Director of Color Marketing and Development Andrea Magno.
Paint and color companies choose colors each fall they hope will set the tone for the coming year. Earlier, PPG chose Chinese Porcelain, a classic combination of cobalt and ink blue, as its 2020 Color of the Year citing it as a sign of “hopefulness … in a restless world.”
Magno cited a changing definition of the home, from a postwar idea to a new time with homes functioning for two or three generations living under one roof together.
Benjamin Moore’s choice leads its 2020 Color Trends palette that includes Blue Danube (teal), Buxton Blue (a light blue from its historical collection), Crystalline (pale soft green), Cushing Green (a soft but deep green from its historical collection), Golden Straw (a soft pale yellow), Oxford Gray (a medium blue-gray), Thunder (light warm gray), White Heron (off-white), and Windmill Wings (light cyan-blue).
Top color choices for 2019 varied widely, with color consultant Pantone choosing the spirited Living Coral, Benjamin Moore opting for a traditional soft gray in Metropolitan, Sherwin-Williams going earthy with Cavern Clay, Behr going bold with Blueprint (teal) and PPG opting for Night Watch, a deep evergreen.
