Goodell: reviews are working well

-

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the new video review rule for pass interference is working as expected, with only obvious mistakes by officials being corrected.

Through Week 6, the league has had 44 reviews related to interference, and the on-field ruling was reversed seven times.

“I think coaches understood replay was not going to correct every pass interference close call,” Goodell said Wednesday at the close of the two-day owners’ meetings. “It’s not possible to make it perfect, and we’re not re-officiating these plays. The thought process was to correct the obvious and clear error. I think it’s settling out where we expected.”

The new rule approved as a one-year experiment allows pass interference calls or non-calls to be challenged by coaches and reviewed via replay.

Osweiler retires after seven years

Free-agent quarterback Brock Osweiler, 28,says he is retiring from the NFL, according to a Denver TV station and ESPN.

The ex-Texans, Broncos, Dolphins and Browns quarterback’s biggest contribution was when he went 5-2 as a starter in place of an injured Peyton Manning for the 2015 Broncos, helping them earn the AFC’s top seed en route to a Super Bowl 50 victory. That led to a $72 million deal with the Texans, who traded him to the Browns after one season.

Eagles could have top corners back

Jalen Mills (foot) and Ronald Darby (hamstring) were back at practice, Wednesday. The team’s starting cornerbacks haven’t played together in a game since last Oct. 28. They could be on the field Sunday when the Eagles (3-3) visit Dallas (3-3).

The Eagles are 13-5 when Mills and Darby play.

Three teams make QB changes

The Tennessee Titans want have one touchdown over the past 10 quarters, so they’re turning to veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill and benching Marcus Mariota.

The winless Miami Dolphins will have Ryan Fitzpatrick make his first start since Week 2 when the Dolphins play at Buffalo.

In Pittsburgh, coach Mike Tomlin said that quarterback Mason Rudolph will return to the starting lineup after being cleared following a concussion he had on Oct. 6.

Odds and ends

Seattle tight end Will Dissly (23 receptions) will miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles. …Saquon Barkley was a full-go at practice, increasing the likelihood he will play against the Cardinals. … The Oakland Raiders have signed tight end Darren Waller to a multiyear extension. Waller leads the team with 37 catches.
