Kentucky stops Michigan State

NEW YORK — Tyrese Maxey, Kentucky’s latest freshman star, scored 26 points and the secondrank­ed Wildcats opened the season with a 69-62 victory over No. 1 Michigan State on Tuesday night in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Aside from All-American Cassius Winston, who had 21 points, the Spartans struggled to score.

After Winston cut the lead to three on a three-point play with 1:27 left, Maxey hit a straight on 3 from way behind the line to make it 65-60 with 59 seconds left.

DUKE 68, KANSAS 66

Tre Jones scored 15 points and Cassius Stanley added 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help the No. 4 Blue Devils beat the No. 3 Jayhawks in the Champions Classic at New York.

Trailing 61-59 with 2:29 left, Stanley drove to the basket and made the layup and was fouled. The freshman guard converted the free throw to give the Blue Devils a one-point lead they never relinquish­ed.

TEXAS TECH 85 EASTERN ILLINOIS 60

Newcomer Jahmi’us Ramsey led the No. 13 Red Raiders with 19 points as they opened with a home win over the Panthers.

Davide Moretti, the only returning starter from last season’s team that lost in overtime to Virginia in the national title game, had 11 points.

TJ Holyfield scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting for Tech, and fellow newcomer Terrance Shannon Jr. scored 11 points.

BAYLOR 105 CENTRAL ARKANSAS 61

Jared Butler scored 30 points with a career-high eight 3-pointers and the No. 16 Bears opened with an easy victory at Waco.

MaCio Teague, a transfer from UNC Asheville, had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his debut for Baylor, which led 19-0 lead.

ARKANSAS 91, RICE 43

The Owls got off to a shaky start with 27 turnovers in a loss at Fayettevil­le, Ark.

Ako Adams led Rice, which shot only 29 percent including 2 of 25 on 3-pointers, with 13 points.

SAN DIEGO STATE 77 TEXAS SOUTHERN 42

The Tigers suffered from a dreadful shooting night in losing to the Aztecs at San Diego.

TSU shot 22.6 percent and had only one player — Tyrik Armstrong with 10 points — in double figures.

TULSA 80, HOUSTON BAPTIST 72

Ian DuBose had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Huskies’ road loss.

Jalon Gates added 16 points for HBU, which held an eight-point lead in the first half before falling behind 41-38 at halftime.

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 100 JARVIS CHRISTIAN 62

Antione Lister scored 20 points as the Panthers opened with a home win.

SAM HOUSTON STATE 95 PAUL QUINN 57

Kai Mitchell had 18 points and eight rebounds as the Bearkats cruised at Huntsville.
