Kids need love, not politics

Support LGBT adoption

Regarding “Finalizing a forever family” (A1, Nov. 22): The front page photo captures all the joy, good fortune and relief of having a lone child become a member of a loving family. These adoptive families undergo a rigorous process to adopt a child. There are so many children in Texas who need to be adopted and who receive well-documented abysmal care in our foster care system. Why the Catholic diocese would want to limit this great love and good fortune to only heterosexual couples and their chosen children is beyond me. I’m pretty sure all the teachings of Jesus say to expand love and stay out of politics.

Research shows adopted children thrive in same-sex households. A loving family, whether LGBT or straight, is the best thing for any child. Let’s quit the hating and provide for our children.

Dismay at demolition

Regarding “Historic West Mansion is demolished” (A3, Nov. 23): I was shocked and disgusted by the destruction of the historic West Mansion.

I remember the first meeting I had as a new employee of Johnson Space Center in the summer of 1989. We scientists and flight surgeons were crowded into a musty, small charming room of that structure to discuss the research needed to put humans safely on Mars by 2008. Of course, that never happened, but the debate and thinking from that critical meeting set the stage for forward-thinking research.

The mansion was more than just wood and mortar; it was the scene of deep Texas history. Those who allowed such a gem to be destroyed should feel great remorse. You have stolen from the people who care about Texas and its history.

Long wait to rush

Regarding “State to hold hearings on how to spend federal disaster funds,” (A3, Nov. 22): I find it interesting, and perhaps unfortunate, that after the funds being held up for almost two years that the 45-day public comment period now includes the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays.

In spite of the need to move this process forward, I would hope that the state might consider extending the comment period from Jan. 6, 2020, until later in January to allow more time to optimize public input into this very important process.

Correction: Sunday’s editorial about the mayoral election incorrectly stated that early voting in the Dec. 14 runoff begins Dec. 2. Voters also may vote Wednesday, Nov. 27. Then, after a break for the holiday, early voting will resume Monday, Dec. 2 and extend through Dec. 10.
