» Columbus and East Bernard fall in Class 3A state semifinals.

Columbus will have to wait at least another year to make it state finals debut.

The Cardinals (12-3), who put together their best season in 26 years, were no match for the defending 3A Division I champion as Grandview jumped out to a three-score lead early in the second quarter of a 41-21 win Friday at Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock.

The Zebras (14-1) advance to face Pottsboro (15-0), a 36-35 winner over Brock, in the 3A Division I final at 3 p.m. Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Running back Tremayne Gullatte helped propel Grandview back to the championship round with three rushing touchdowns in the first half. Columbus didn’t score until Brock Schobel hit Kaycon Wilson for a 56-yard touchdown with 9:29 left in the second quarter, temporarily cutting the Zebras’ lead to 20-7. They led 27-7 at halftime.

Grandview extended its lead to 41-7 in the fourth before Schobel and Wilson connected for two more touchdowns of 8 and 13 yards in the final minutes.

OMAHA PEWITT 24 EAST BERNARD 18

The East Bernard Brahmas, who won a state title in 2012, fell just short of a return to the championship game for the second straight year, losing to Pewitt in the Class 3A Division II semifinals at Waco ISD Stadium.

East Bernard stumbled against eventual state champ Newton in the state semis last year.

Pewitt (14-1), which last season lost to Newton in the first round, advances to face Gunter — a 27-20 winner over Canadian — in the 3A Division II final at 7 p.m. Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Pewitt scored first, but East Bernard (14-1) rallied for an 18-16 lead at halftime.

Quarterback Carson Little threw a long touchdown pass to running back Reagan Whitley midway through the second quarter. The score remained the same until Pewitt quarterback Kadrien Johnson scored the only second-half touchdown on a 3-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
