Report: Baylor’s Rhule to interview at Carolina

-

ESPN reported the Carolina Panthers plan to interview Baylor head coach Matt Rhule to potentially replace the fired Ron Rivera.

According to the report, the Panthers have interviewed former Packers coach Mike McCarthy and would like to interview multiple NFL offensive coordinators, including New England’s Josh McDaniel. Interim head coach Perry Fewell will also get an interview.

Rhule is prepping his team to face Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday and won’t speak to media until Tuesday.

After drawing NFL interest for the last two offseasons, Rhule agreed to a contract extension with Baylor to keep him in Waco through the 2027 season.

Rhule’s only NFL experience came as an assistant with the New York Giants, but that didn’t stop the Indianapolis Colts last year and New York Jets this past offseason from pursuing him for head coaching jobs.

On Sunday, before practice at the New Orleans Saints facility, Rhule decided to address the report with his entire team and coaching staff.

“He said, if he has an opportunity to talk with an NFL team, it would be kinda dumb not to,” said sophomore linebacker Terrel Bernard. ‘‘I think all the guys understand where he’s coming from.“In other news:

Texas junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger has requested an evaluation from the NFL college advisory committee, though Longhorns fans shouldn’t necessarily fear their star quarterback fleeing for the pros as an underclassmen.

“I’m not spending any time thinking about it, to tell you the truth,” Ehlinger said during Sunday’s Alamo Bowl press conference. “I want to win, so I’ll probably evaluate and think about things from there.”
