China should point finger
Border hypocrisy
Regarding “Congress turns up China heat on Trump” and “Mexicans are joining the asylum line at the U.S. border,” (A8, Dec. 28): Your juxtaposition of these articles was certainly on point. How can Congress be so concerned about passing legislation on human rights abuses in China and other foreign countries while totally ignoring those same abuses on our southern border? Talk about hypocritical.
I think China and those other countries should just turn around and accuse us of the very same thing. Where is Human Rights Watch? Sandra Vaughn, Seabrook
Editorial commended
Regarding “Editorial against Trump has important message for evangelicals,” (A3, Dec. 25): Erica Grieder’s commentary was spot on, and I commend Mark Galli of “Christianity Today” for stepping up and saying what many “evangelicals” put a deaf ear to.
As long as the economy does well, they will praise him. They say nothing when he demeans God’s children. One Republican dared to compare him to Jesus for being persecuted, as though he is worthy of being compared to what Jesus went through.
Being hypocritical, they turn a blind eye as they convince themselves that appointing pro-life judges makes Trump moral when they know he does it for political reasons.

What would Jesus do?
Regarding reader comment on “Editorial against Trump has important message for evangelicals,” (A3, Dec. 25): Will the idiocy ever end? When will the jackals ever realize that we elected Trump to guide our country and not to be a religious leader or a role model for your kids?
How can anyone who has any knowledge of our past presidents’ follies stand flat-footed and verbally eviscerate President Trump? He is not perfect, I agree, but neither have prior leaders in the House, Senate or the White House been without fault or blemish. These endless attacks on Trump are mostly politically motivated and carried out because your favored party or candidate lost.
To answer the rhetorical question — “What would Jesus do?” — I don’t know what Jesus would do, but I don’t think he would turn a blind eye to one man and damn the other! James Connealy, Baytown
