Rice falters in C-USA opener at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. — Taevion Kinsey posted 19 points and eight assists as Marshall cruised to an 89-69 victory over Rice in the teams’ Conference USA opener Thursday night.

Kinsey made eight of 13 shots from the floor for the Thundering Herd (7-7, 1-0), who shot 58 percent from the floor (35of-60). Jarrod West added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Marshall led 44-35 at halftime.

Drew Peterson had 18 points to lead the Owls (8-6, 0-1).

HOUSTON BAPTIST 111 CENTRAL ARKANSAS 107

Ian DuBose scored a careerhigh 44 points with 11 rebounds, and the Huskies defeated the Bears in overtime at Sharp Gym.

Houston Baptist (1-10, 1-1 Southland Conference) ended a 12game losing streak that started March 9. The Huskies hadn’t won since March 6 when they beat Incarnate Word 118-111.

GONZAGA 85, PORTLAND 72

Killian Tillie had 22 points, Corey Kispert added 18, and the No. 1 Bulldogs (15-1, 1-0 West Coast Conference) rallied in the second half to beat the host Pilots for the 12th straight time.

COLORADO 74, OREGON 65

McKinley Wright IV scored 11 of his 21 points in the final 5 minutes, and the Buffaloes (12-2, 1-0 Pac-12) defeated another ranked team, taking down the fourth-ranked Ducks (11-3, 0-1) in Boulder, Colo.

MICHIGAN ST. 76, ILLINOIS 56

Cassius Winston had 21 points, and Xavier Tillman scored 19, leading the No. 14 Spartans over the Fighting Illini in East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State (11-3, 3-0 Big Ten) has won six straight and its first three conference games to stay alone in first place.

Obi Toppin scored 20 points as the No. 20 Flyers (12-2) used a big first-half run to cruise past the Explorers in the teams’ Atlantic

Zach Nutall had a career-high 25 points as the Bearkats defeated the Cowboys in Lake Charles, La., to improve to 10-4 and 3-0 in the Southland Conference.

Kevon Harris had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Roti Ware added a career-high 20 points, and the Lumberjack­s topped the Lions in Hammond, La., to improve to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the Southland Conference.

Women TEXAS A&M 84, ARKANSAS 77

Chennedy Carter scored 28 points, N’dea Jones and Ciera Johnson each had a doubledoub­le, and the No. 11 Aggies beat the No. 20 Razorbacks in the teams’ Southeaste­rn Conference opener at Fayettevil­le, Ark.

Jones finished with a careerhigh 22 points and 14 rebounds and Johnson had 11 points and 10 boards. Kayla Wells added 15 points for Texas A&M (13-1).

Chelsea Dungee led Arkansas (12-2) with 20 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter.

CONNECTICU­T 83, WICHITA ST. 55

Crystal Dangerfiel­d scored 22 points, and Megan Walker added 21 to lead the No. 1 Huskies over the visiting Shockers, giving Connecticu­t its 122nd win without a loss in American Athletic Conference play. Christyn Williams had 19 points for the Huskies (11-0, 2-0), who have won all 104 regular-season games since the conference was formed and all six AAC tournament­s.

Freshmen Brea Beal and Zia Cooke had 15 points each, and the No. 4 Gamecocks (13-1) quickly eliminated any thoughts of an upset, dispatchin­g the 13thranked Wildcats (11-2) in Columbia, S.C., to start Southeaste­rn Conference play.

Emily Engstler hit the winning layup at the overtime buzzer, and the host Orange upset the previously unbeaten No. 8 Seminoles (13-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Elissa Cunane scored 14 of her 28 points in the final 7:10 to help the No. 9 Wolfpack beat the Hokies in Raleigh, N.C., and improve to 13-0 and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

GEORGIA TECH 61, MIAMI 54

Jasmine Carson and Lotta-Maj Lahtinen scored 15 points apiece, combining for 18 in a dominating fourth quarter, and the Yellow Jackets upset the 23rd-ranked Hurricanes in Atlanta.
