Alcorn State deals TSU first home loss

Texas Southern’s success at the H&PE Arena came to an end Monday night as Alcorn State handed the Tigers their first home loss of the season 95-80.

Bryson Etienne led TSU (4-11, 1-1 SWAC) with 20 points. Yahuza Rasas contribute­d 12 points and 15 rebounds.

The Tigers were without leading scorer Tyrik Armstrong (14.8 points per game).

Alcorn State (5-8, 1-1) ended an eight-game road losing streak. Maurice Howard scored a careerhigh 31 points and Corey Tillery added 26 for the Braves.

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 64 SOUTHERN 54

Darius Williams came off the bench to score 14 points as the Panthers won at home to move to 2-0 in SWAC play.

Prairie View (6-9) won its sixth in a row against Southern (3-12, 0-2) by continuing a season-long trend of drawing fouls. Williams was 9 of 10 at the line to lead an 18-of-24 effort on free throws for the team that leads the SWAC in that category by shooting 21.9 per game.

WEST VIRGINIA 55 OKLAHOMA STATE 41

Oscar Tshiebwe scored 12 points and Derek Culver had nine points and 12 rebounds to help lead the No. 17 Mountainee­rs to a victory over the Cowboys at Stillwater, Okla.

The Mountainee­rs (12-2, 1-1 Big 12) fell 60-53 at No. 3 Kansas on Saturday but rebounded in a big way in this one, maintainin­g at least a double-digit lead for virtually the entire second half.

Lindy Waters had 12 points for Oklahoma State (9-5, 0-2), which is 2-5 in its last seven after starting the season 7-0.

Women TEXAS A&M 79, MISSISSIPP­I 35

Ciera Johnson scored 17 points as the No. 10 Aggies cruised to a victory over the Rebels at College Station.

A&M (14-1, 2-0 Southeaste­rn Conference) jumped to a 37-19 lead at halftime, despite star guard Chennedy Carter not collecting her first field goal until 2:51 remained in the first half. Carter was 23.2 points per game but scored 13 points against the Rebels (7-8, 0-2 SEC), with 11 of those coming in the second half.

The Aggies re-entered the Top 10 on Monday for the first time since falling out after an 80-58 loss to current No. 11 Florida State on Dec. 1.

TEXAS 81, IOWA STATE 75

The Longhorns bounced back from a conference-opening loss by winning at Ames, Iowa behind 17 points apiece from Joyner Holmes and Lashann Higgs.

Texas (9-5, 1-1) was coming off a 65-63 home loss to TCU in the league opener. The Longhorns opened a 64-48 lead after three quarters and then stayed comfortabl­y ahead the rest of the way as the final score was as close as Iowa State (9-4, 1-1) came in the fourth period.

Richelle Velez scored 26 points and Niya Mitchell and Ciani Cryor added 22 each as the Tigers scored at will in a victory over the visiting Braves.

Ke’Asia Williams scored 13 points for the Panthers in their home loss.
