Sanders campaign to open Houston site

- By Jeremy Wallace

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is coming back to Texas for a rally and ramping up his campaign operations here.

On Thursday his campaign will open new field offices in Houston and Austin before opening two more over the weekend, in San Antonio and McAllen.

And on Friday, Sanders will hold a free rally in the Dallas area.

Those events come just days after his campaign announced it is expanding overall staffing in Texas and increasing its television and digital ads.

“Bernie’s multiracial, multigenerational, peopledriven movement is fueling our campaign across the Lone Star State,” said Bernie 2020 Texas Field Director Chris Chu de León.

The build up is happening just before Texas begins early voting in the presidential primary election. Voting begins on Feb. 18 and runs through Feb. 28. Election day is March 3.

Texas is part of Super Tuesday, when 14 states will vote.

A new national poll released on Monday, shows Sanders has jumped into the lead for the Democratic nomination. Among 665 Democratic voters, Sanders was the choice of 25 percent in the new Quinnipiac University poll. Former Vice President Joe Biden dropped to second at 17 percent. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who has bet big on campaigning in Texas, was third with 15 percent.

On Friday night, Sanders will be Mesquite Arena, 1818 Rodeo Drive, Mesquite. That event is free and open to the public.

The Sanders campaign will have a grand opening event at its new office in Houston starting at 6:30 pm. on Thursday on Houston’s East End. The office is at 608 S. Sgt. Macario Garcia Drive.

On Saturday, the campaign will open its office in San Antonio at 1 p.m. at 110 W. Carolina St., San Antonio.
