PICKS FROM MARK ELLENBERGER AND EMILY TROUT

-

2012 Damoli Vini ‘Checo’ Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG

Trout: “We discovered the wine on a trip we took to Valpolicella (Italy) last September with our best friends. Damoli is definitely a family operation. The father works the vineyards, the son makes the wines, and his sister handles marketing and sales.” The Amarone is a blend of corvina (40 percent), corvinone (35) and rondinella that has spent four to five years in old French oak. $42 glass, $175 for a bottle

2015 Brooks Tethys Late Harvest Riesling

Trout: “We vacationed in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in the fall of 2018 and headed out in the morning for a wine-tasting. Instead of going the traditional route of tasting from lighter wines to heavier ones, our host poured me a taste of the 2015 Brooks Tethy’s to start. It was the sweet shock to the system that I needed but never expected. I’ve always been a fan of dessert wine but don’t always get to enjoy it after a full evening. So every now and then I’ll start with ‘dessert’ first and let the rest of the day evolve from there.” $16 for a glass, $65 for a bottle

2017 Odfjell Orzada Carignon

Ellenberger: “‘Orzada’ is the Spanish word for sailing into the wind, which speaks to the sailor in me. The vines are bush-trained in a more traditional method and are certified organically farmed. It has a deep and intense ruby color with a touch of violet and displays a never-ending mix of aromas such as cherry liqueur, anise, apricots and peaches.” $15 for a glass, $46 for a bottle

2016 Kagan Cellars White Hawk Vineyard Syrah

Ellenberger: “It’s a full-bodied wine with black cherry and cooking spices on the nose and a round full finish, truly an ‘Old World’ wine made from ‘New World’ fruit.” $20 for a glass, $81 for a bottle
