HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

- Adam Coleman

Boys

Jevarrick Butler, Cleveland

Notable: Butler’s gamewinning 3-pointer at the buzzer sent Cleveland past Vidor 58-57 in double overtime. The victory kept Cleveland alive in the District 21-5A playoff race heading into the final week of the regular season. Butler is averaging 30 points per game this season.

What coach Derek

Williams said: “You’re talking about a kid that played a couple of games last year, breaks his leg and then has to come back and carry this team. Being the way Cleveland has not caught up with the growth, we still have 3A numbers and we’ve grown so fast. We’ll be 5A Division I next year. And you’re talking about a kid that everybody knows is going to get it. He touches it every possession, and he’s playing against the teams’ best defender week in and week out and he still averages that. That’s a pretty good kid in my book.”

Other nominees

Cameron Ward, West

Columbia: The Incarnate Ward football pledge scored 37 points, was 5of-6 on 3-pointers and 12-of-12 on free throws in an 88-70 win over Brazosport. He also had seven rebounds and three assists.

Bryce Foster, Katy Taylor: The offensive tackle set personal and school records in the discus at 191 feet, 4 inches at the Will Taylor Relays.

Caleb Young, Covenant Christian: Young scored 31 points in an 81-74 overtime victory over Temple Holy Trinity. Covenant moves on to the regional round of the TAPPS Class 2A state playoffs.

Girls

Yamileth Rodriguez, Aldine

Notable: The junior forward had five goals in two district wins last week — four against Dekaney and one against Westfield — to put Aldine back in the playoff hunt.

What coach Mark Kuehl said: “Yamileth really attacked the goal this week and hopefully she continues to be aggressive toward goal and finish the opportunities her teammates give her.”

Other nominees

Ashlyn Ryall, Friendswood: The junior guard scored 18 points with four 3-pointers, five assists and three rebounds in a district championship-clinching win over Galena Park.
