Support the news

-

Regarding “Yes, it costs to have good aggressive journalism,” (A22, April 19): Dear Mr. Pitts, please continue to be proud of your profession. Many uncomfortable emotions ran through me as I read your article begging us to appreciate the importance of good news — and pay for it. I subscribe to two papers — the Wall Street Journal and the Houston Chronicle — because I want to make sure I remain a well-informed citizen. The low percentage (8 percent) of Americans who subscribe to news online disturbs me even more than the percent who pay for music and video.

I worry that people are getting lazy and rely on snippets of news they catch here and there. Can they really make informed decisions when it’s time to vote?

Wake up people! We need to support this facet of our democracy lest we lose our voices through ignorance.

J. Flannery, Houston

To the staff at the Houston Chronicle: Thank you so much for your professional dedication in the daily production of the Houston Chronicle. Your hard work is most appreciated. The daily paper is both a necessity and a luxury for me. I also wish to commend the excellent service I receive from my courier, Ms. Lilianna Agreda. Every day, no matter the weather or the crazy events in Houston, my paper is waiting for me at my apartment door, and at a very early morning hour.

All of you, please keep up the good work, stay healthy and thank you!

Shana K. Griffin, Houston
