» Musicians dedicate songs to moms.

- By Joey Guerra STAFF WRITER

There’s always a song that reminds you of your mother.

For me, there are several. “This One’s for the Girls” by Martina McBride takes me back to my mother’s battle with Stage 4 breast cancer. It became her rallying cry. “Amor Eterno” by Rocio Durcal reminds me that she’s endlessly sentimental. And, well, anything by Kelly Clarkson.

I posed the same question to several Houston musicians, wondering if they’d choose their own songs. After all, they’ve had the unique opportunity to write a song specifically for their mom. The answers were expectedly varied and sweet. Genre-hopping singer Karina Nistal even wrote one especially for this project.

Rapper Bigg Fatts: “My mom Katherine Williams is the definition of perseverance. She has been battling cancer since 2015. She also had a mild stroke in 2018, which is chronicled in the song I’m dedicating to her. Through it all, one would never know what’s she’s been through. Her smile is there every day as she battles on with health and life. She’s a fighter when things get real.” Song: “Really Real,” by Bigg Fatts

Latin Grammy winner Juan Treviño: “My good friend Lupe Guevara from Grupo BXS (Brindis Por Siempre) asked me to write a song for his mom who had recently passed. He wanted to release it for Mother’s Day 2018. It was a little tough for me because I still had my mom with me. So I put myself in his shoes, not knowing that I would lose her the next year. That’s when this song really hit home. It was as if I had written exactly what I was going to feel in the future. It’s hard to explain. So this Mother’s Day is going to be hard for me. I’m sure it’s hard for a lot of people that don’t have their moms in this world anymore. Hopefully this song can help them like it helps me. Song: “El Ultimo Viaje (Para Mi Madre)” by BXS

Kam Franklin of The Suffers: “Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate all the moms that are here, the moms that are no longer with us, the moms that are soon to be and the moms that want to be. Thank you for everything you do as mothers. To my mother Diana, stepmother, Rikki, all the aunties and wonderful women that helped make me who I am today, thank you and Happy Mother’s Day.” Song: “Mammas” by The Suffers

Drag queen Muffy Vanderbilt III: “I don’t have a great relationship with my birth mother, so my drag mom, Dessie LoveBlake, has always been there for me since Day 1 of my drag career, selflessly giving advice and pushing me to be the best I can be. Following her lead, I have been changed for good. Song: “For Good” from the musical “Wicked”

Rapper Switch Martinez: “I was gonna drop this song last year on Mother’s Day, but it’s unreleased. I dedicate this to my mom because if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have even went after this. Since my first rhyme, she was behind me 100 percent, introduced me to my first label situation and more. To this day, she is my biggest supporter. Song: “End of Discussion” by Switch Martinez

DJ Gracie Chavez of Bombón: “This Mother’s Day, I’m not only celebrating with my mom but also with my own girls. They have made me be a better mom, woman and human being. This song is so healing when I hear it. It’s a reminder of all the struggles we’ve overcome in the last few years together. Jazmin and Cassia are my greatest joy.” Song: “Cranes in the Sky” by Solange
