SHRP says it’s ready to reopen quickly

-

Though race tracks aren’t included in Gov. Greg Abbott’s COVID-19 reopening rules and guidelines for Texas, Sam Houston Race Park is prepared to open on short notice.

“We don’t know when word will come,” said Dwight Berube, the track’s vice president and general manager. “When it does, we’ll be ready to go.”

Wagering machines have been spaced at 6-foot intervals, as have circle floor mats for those waiting in line to wager. Tables and chairs also have been moved apart by 6 feet. The readiness plan also includes installing transparent plastic guards at wagering and concession windows.

SHRP has been closed since March 22, when it canceled the final four dates of thoroughbred season and its entire quarter horse meet. Live racing won’t resume until January.
