THSCA to host virtual ‘coaching school’ convention
The Texas High School Coaches Association’s summer convention is going virtual.
The association canceled the in-person event July 19-21 in San Antonio because of the coronavirus pandemic. The dates for the virtual convention remain the same, but the agenda has been consolidated to allow for coaches to resume strength and conditioning training with athletes.
Many school districts across Texas have temporarily halted in-person summer training as a response to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state. Most summer programs are expected to return to in-person instruction in mid-July.
“We had hoped for a decrease in the spread of the coronavirus as we neared the convention date but the situation has evolved rapidly and we are committed to do our part to protect our attendees, sponsors, vendors and staff,” the association said in a press release.
“Coaching school,” as it is known throughout the state, acts as the unofficial start to the new year for high school athletics in Texas, especially for football. The convention features workshops and lectures, panel discussions and training sessions, among other tools intended to benefit coaches. It’s also where coaches can complete the Tackle Training Certification program from Atavus, which the association says is still being offered online from noon to 5 p.m. July 22.
The THSCA convention also features several press conference with the state’s college football coaches, and University Interscholastic League officials typically meet with media members ahead of the new year as well.
Last week in response to the pandemic, the Texas Girls Coaches Association announced a cancellation of its in-person summer clinic in Arlington. It’s allowing access to a virtual clinic July 15-Aug. 31.
