The NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed not to have any preseason games, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

NFLPA president and Cleveland Browns center J.C. Tretter informed players of the development on a call Tuesday afternoon.

The NFL originally wanted two preseason games, then asked for just one Monday before agreeing a day later to cancel the preseason.

The Texans were scheduled to visit Minnesota and New Orleans and host Seattle and Dallas.

Players also were told that they should expect to have 80-player roster limits per team heading into training camp instead of the normal 90-player allotment.

The NFL previously agreed to have daily COVID-19 testing after initially wanting to test every other day.

The league and the players union still are negotiating salary cap issues. NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith predicted a $70 million shortfall per team this season because of reduced revenue amid the global health crisis.

The NFLPA said 59 players were known to be positive for COVID-19 as of Tuesday.

That number reflects the total around the league, not just from rookies reporting to training camp this week. NFL rosters are currently at 90 players per team for a total of 2,880 players, so the positive tests represent just 2 percent of the NFL work force.

The Texans and Chiefs reported for COVID-19 testing Monday.

The NFLPA previously announced that 72 players were known to have tested positive as of July 10. Included in that group: Rams offensive linemen Andrew Whitworth and Brian Allen, Broncos linebacker Von Miller and Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.
