-

Owner: Dr. Madaiah Revana Locations: St. Helena, Calif. (Revana), Dundee Hills, Ore. (Alexana), Uco Valley, Argentina (Corazon del Sol)

Backstory: The Humble-based cardiologist grew up on a farm near Bangalore in his native India. As he was establishing his medical practice here some 40 years ago, Houston friends introduced him to fine wine, and he was hooked. He bought his first vineyard just north of St. Helena in 1997 after attending a medical conference in San Francisco. He built a winery and a home there, then added a second property in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and a third in Argentina, in the Vines of Mendoza development. Winemakers: At Revana, Thomas Rivers Brown, arguably California’s most peripatetic consulting winemaker, is in charge, having taken over for the no less esteemed Heidi Barrett a few vintages back. Bryan Weil, an Oregon State enology grad who had his head turned by wine while preparing to be a chef, has run the show at Alexana since 2012. Santiago Achával, one of Argentina’s rockstar vintners, and Cristian Moor share the duties at Corazon del Sol.

Varietals/blends: Cabernet sauvignon (Revana); chardonnay, pinot noir, rosé of pinot noir, pinot gris and a white Rhone blend (Alexana); GSM blend, Bordeaux blend, cabernet sauvignon-cabernet franc co-fermentation (Corazon del Sol)

Price range: $159.99 for 2014 Revana Terroir Series Cabernet Sauvignon at Total Wine. Other Revana releases are available through the wine club only.
