Springer late scratch with sore right wrist

-

Outfielder George Springer was a late scratch from the Astros’ lineup Tuesday. Springer had right wrist soreness a day after he jammed his hand into first base on a pickoff attempt.

Manager Dusty Baker said Springer was absent during most of Tuesday’s game while undergoing an MRI exam, which was negative.

He said he considered using Springer on defense late in the 11-inning game but did not want to risk having the outfielder come to bat if the game lingered longer.

Baker said he did not know if Springer would be available to play Wednesday in Denver against the Rockies.

“You guys saw it that when he dove back into first base (Monday), he reinjured it,” the manager said. “But the fact that the MRI was good was a plus.”

Springer was injured Aug. 6 in Phoenix while attempting to make a headfirst catch against the Diamondbacks. An X-ray and MRI revealed no fractures, but he missed four games before returning to the lineup Aug. 11.
