Titans land Clowney

-

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans announced Sunday they agreed to terms with threetime Pro Bowl linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on a one-year contract. The Titans did not announce the terms. But ESPN.com reported the deal could be worth up to $15 million.

The Titans also shared on Twitter photos of Clowney next to a plane with controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk.

The No. 1 overall pick of 2014, Clowney went into free agency looking for a mega-contract that never came calling. The pandemic shut down travel for physicals, and Clowney didn’t visit anyone once the NFL allowed free agents to meet teams in person.

That was despite having reported interest from Seattle, Tennessee, Cleveland, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New Orleans. The Titans never hid their interest in the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Clowney.

Clowney joins a team that lost the AFC championship game in January and the coach whom the linebacker had his best season with when Mike Vrabel was Houston’s defensive coordinator in 2017.

Peterson signs with Lions

Two days after being released by the Washington Football Team, Adrian Peterson signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions and rejoins offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, with whom he had his most productive rushing seasons in Minnesota.

The deal, according to ESPN, is worth $1,050,000, plus incentives.

In two seasons in Washington, the 35-year-old Peterson had rushed for 1,940 yards, scoring 12 touchdowns, in 31 games.

Carr returning to Cowboys

Veteran defensive back Brandon Carr has returned to the Dallas Cowboys as a member of their practice squad after starting every game the past 12 NFL seasons.

Carr, who played the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, was among 14 players the Cowboys signed to their practice squad Sunday.

Odds and ends

Suspended wide receiver Antonio Callaway will get a chance to revive his career with the Dolphins, who signed him to their practice squad. Callaway was suspended twice in 2019 for violations of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He had legal troubles in college at Florida but was drafted by the Browns in the fourth round in 2018. As a rookie he had 34 catches for 586 yards and five touchdowns, but the Browns released him last November. … Bears coach Matt Nagy selected Mitchell Trubisky as the winner of the starting quarterback competition over Nick Foles because of several areas of improvement he saw during the course of training camp. “In the end, Mitch won the job and I think that’s very important for him, for us, for everybody, to understand, that he worked really hard to get to this point,” Nagy said. … The Steelers claimed quarterback Josh Dobbs and safety Sean Davis off waivers, a day after they failed to make the 53-man rosters elsewhere. Dobbs was cut by Jacksonville while Davis was let go by Washington. … The Titans placed their top draft pick, offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, back on the COVID-Reserve list. Under the COVID-Reserve list, a player either tested positive for COVID-19 or is quarantined after being in close contact with someone who has the virus.
