Foster routs Lamar Consolidated Cypress Park’s Perkins does double duty

- Adam Coleman

One of the best 5A teams in the Houston area and the state in Foster opened with an emphatic 79-7 win over Lamar Consolidated on Friday.

Foster senior wide receiver Cody Jackson had three catches for 59 yards and two touchdowns with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Oklahoma commitment is one of the best players in the country at his position and gives the Falcons legit state title aspirations in 2020.

Demonstrations seen at several stadiums

Area high school football players continue to protest racial injustice during the national anthem.

A handful of Shadow Creek players took a knee during the national anthem ahead of Friday’s game against North Shore at Galena Park ISD Stadium. Every player on North Shore’s sideline stood and locked arms in unity.

El Campo players have taken a knee during the anthem this season. It’s happened in previous years in the Houston area with members of the Heights football team kneeling in 2017.

Cedric Ingram-Lewis and LarryMcCullough of Victory & Praise Christian Academy in Crosby were kicked off their football team for demonstrating during the anthem in 2017.

Katy cornerbacks Hunter Washington and Bobby Taylor sat out the Tigers’ scrimmage against Klein Collins last week and opener against Clear Springs on Saturday in protest of police brutality.

Players are playing both ways at Cypress Park, meaning highlytouted junior linebacker Harold Perkins gets the chance to play running back.

Perkins rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown on just six carries in a 55-40 win over Cypress Ridge on Thursday at Pridgeon Stadium.

Perkins is ranked 26th in the state overall by 247Sports composite rankings, with offers from Houston, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Baylor, Auburn and Alabama, among others.

Perhaps a position change is in order.

Katy to open season at Clear Springs

Clear Springs hosts Katy at 1 p.m. Saturday at Challenger Columbia Stadium.

Clear Springs head coach Craig Dailey is a former coordinator at Katy and the two teams have met in non-district play in recent years.

General thought says if the road to a state championship doesn’t go east through North Shore, it will go west through Katy. The Tigers are loaded again with standouts like defensive end Malick Sylla leading the way. Only North Shore has stood in the Tigers’ way the last two years. Clear Springs is talented on its own, making the playoff every year since 2009.

College Park tops Cinco Ranch 20-13

Could College Park make the playoffs this season?

The Cavaliers ousted Cinco Ranch in a 20-13 win on Friday, starting 2020 on a good note after going 5-5 in 2019.

College Park hasn’t made the playoffs since 2015 and this year sits in the tough District 13-6A in Region II.
