‘Urbane Bronze’ creates colorful haven

- By Diane Cowen STAFF WRITER

Never have our homes needed to feel like a sanctuary more than now.

Even as the world is starting to reopen from the coronavirus pandemic, many of us are still working from home, with children attending school from home. We’re not going to gyms, and we’re not going to movies. We’re picking up takeout for dinner.

So it’s natural that SherwinWilliams would pick the rich, grounding hue “Urbane Bronze” for its 2021 Color of the Year.

“The home is now the ultimate retreat from the world, and color is an easy and effective way to create a personal haven,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at SherwinWilliams. “‘Urbane Bronze’ encourages you to create a sanctuary space for mindful reflection and renewal.”

“Naval,” a deeply saturated dark blue, was Sherwin-Williams’ pick for 2020. Seemingly channeling the same vibe, Pantone chose “Classic Blue” and PPG chose “Chinese Porcelain” for their 2020 top colors.

Earlier this month, PPG named a trio of its own colors — “Transcend,” “Misty Aqua” and “Big Cypress” — as its 2021 Palette of the Year.

Paint companies and color influencers pick a favorite color of the year as a reflection of what’s going on in the world. “Urbane Bronze” is a sophisticated bronze-brown hue that can bring a sense of calm to a room. It’s a color drawn from trends of the 1970s and ’90s, but updated with gray undertones.

The color is from the “Sanctuary” palette that Sherwin-Wil

liams included in its 2021 Colormix Forecast announced earlier this year with a prediction that the world needs rich, bold colors in this ’20 decade as we leave behind the cool neutrals of the 2010s.

Sherwin-Williams pairs “Urbane Bronze” with warm neutrals such as “Modern Gray,” a bone white, or “Messenger Bag,” a modern green.

Other past Color of the Year choices from Sherwin-Williams include “Cavern Clay” in 2019, “Oceanside” in 2018, “Poised Taupe” in 2017 and “Alabaster” in 2016.
