Cardinals clinch postseason berth
ST. LOUIS — Harrison Bader tripled and homered to help the St. Louis Cardinals clinch a postseason berth on the final day of the regular season with a 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
St. Louis (30-28) will be the fifth seed in the NL and will open a three-game wild-card series at San Diego on Wednesday. The Brewers also locked up a spot when San Francisco lost to San Diego.
REDS 5, TWINS 3 (10): Tucker Barnhart and Eugenio Suarez had RBI singles in the10th inning, and host Cincinnati beat Minnesota in a regular-season finale that determined postseason matchups. Cincinnat became the NL’s seventh seed and will play No. 2 Atlanta starting Wednesday. Minnesota clinched its second straight AL Central title when the White Sox lost to the Cubs. The Twins host No. 6 Houston starting Tuesday.
CUBS 10, WHITE SOX 8: Kris Bryant homered to send the White Sox to their seventh loss in eight games. The Cubs are the NL’s third seed for their fifth playoff appearance in the last six years. They will be at Wrigley Field for the wild-card round beginning on Wednesday against No. 6 seed Miami.
RAYS 5, PHILLIES 0: Rookie Josh Fleming allowed four hits over six innings as AL East champion Tampa Bay eliminated Philadelphia from the playoff race at St. Petersburg, Fla.
PADRES 5, GIANTS 4: San Francisco had its postseason hopes dashed, losing to playoff-bound San Diego at home.
INDIANS 8, PIRATES 6: Carlos Santana had four RBIs as host Cleveland won to move into second place in the AL Central and fourth in the AL.
MARLINS 5, YANKEES 0: Miami won at New York behind a home run and three RBIs from rookie Jazz Chisholm. Miami earned the NL’s sixth seed and a matchup at the Chicago Cubs in the first round. New York hung on for the AL’s fifth seed when Toronto lost to Baltimore. The Yankees will play at Cleveland in the first round.
ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 2: Mark Canha drove in four runs as Oakland beat Seattle. Oakland’s victory gave the ALWest champion A’s the No. 2 seed. They’ll host a best-of-three series against the seventh-seeded Chicago White Sox beginning Tuesday.
RED SOX 9, BRAVES 1: Jackie Bradley Jr. homered and last-place Boston won its final game under manager Ron Roenicke, who was informed that he would not be retained. The NL East champion Braves wound up as the No. 2 seed and will face Cincinnati starting Wednesday.
DODGERS 5, ANGELS 0: AJ Pollock homered twice and the Dodgers won their eighth consecutive division title. The Angels fired GM Billy Eppler after the team finished its fifth consecutive losing season.
