Bridgeland holds off ShadowCreek
Bridgeland has two impressive wins to start the year over Klein Cain last week and now last year’s Class 5A Division I champion Shadow Creek in Friday’s 27-21 win.
Bridgeland quarterback Conner Weigman’s star only rises. He completed 27 of 41 passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. He added 14 carries for 50 yards. Bridgeland is 2-0 without top receiver and SMU commitment Dylan Goffney, who is injured but expected to return soon.
Shadow Creek was without starting quarterback and Baylor commitment Kyron Drones. Drones was held out of Friday’s game for precautionary reasons but is healthy. Duke Butler was 15 of 31 for 195 yards and three touchdowns in Drones’ place.
Bridgeland meets Langham Creek next week. Shadow Creek meets Alief Taylor.
Westfield finally gets a game — and a win
The two teams met in another interesting matchup Friday night, withWestfield defeating Hightower 37-28.
Westfield ranks sixth in the area’s 6A media poll, coming off 2019’s 13-win season and state semifinal berth.
Finally playing a game is somethingWestfield appreciates, too. The Mustangs had Duncanville and Flower Mound Marcus scheduled for non-district games this season but COVID-19 interrupted those plans.
Westfield dips into district play against Aldine Davis next week.
Davis, Banks pace North Shore’s victory
Klein Collins pushed defending
Class 6A Division I champion North Shore in Thursday’s game, but the Mustangs prevailed in a 30-23 win to improve to 2-0.
Klein Collins led 16-7 at one point behind quarterback and Arizona tight end commitment Colby Powers’ two rushing touchdowns. Powers was injured, however, leaving Justin Castillo to finish the game. Castillo didn’t wilt with a third-quarter touchdown pass to Aiden Smith. Klein Collins running back Jonathan Lewis rushed for 122 yards on 20 carries, too.
North Shore found a way as it often does. Quarterback and Auburn commitment Dematrius Davis threw for 215 yards and a
touchdown on 15-of-22 passing with 12 carries for 112 yards and three more touchdowns. So far in 2020, the senior is 29 of 42 for 412 yards, two touchdowns and one interception with 190 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries.
North Shore wide receiver Shadrach Banks, coming off a seasonending injury in 2019, caught six passes for 92 yards and 52-yard touchdown against Klein Collins, too.
More cancellations, schedule changes made
It seems COVID-19 ensures there will be changes to the high school football schedule every week.
Foster and Travis’ Thursday meeting was canceled. Foster was fresh off a 79-7 win over Lamar Consolidated last week. It was Travis’ opener with Fort Bend ISD returning to play this weekend.
Bellaire and Dobie’s meeting was canceled but Dobie found a replacement in St. Thomas. Dobie topped St. Thomas 42-14. Huntsville’s season opener against Nederland was canceled last week.
COVID-19 didn’t postpone all rivalries
BeaumontWest Brook and Beaumont United’s nascent rivalry turned into a scrimmage this year. The Clash of the Causeway between Galveston Ball and La Marque did not happen.
B.F. Terry and Lamar Consolidated still played the Battle of the ‘Berg, perhaps helpful with both teams in Lamar Consolidated ISD. Terry defeated Lamar Consolidated 25-19 on Friday at Traylor Stadium.
No. 2 Katy to be tested by CypressWoods
The quarterback situation at Katy is one to watch in 2020. The Tigers, ranked second in this week’s 6A media poll, meet CypressWoods at 6 p.m. Saturday.
They are officially without fouryear letterman and three-year starter Bronson McClelland, who withdrew from school this week.
Bryce Nirider started under center in Katy’s 28-13 win over Clear Springs with Caleb Koger seeing action as well.
Katy running back Jalen Davis and its defensive line of Cal Varner, Malick Sylla and Cohen Dearman led the way last week.
