Bridgeland holds off ShadowCree­k

Bridgeland has two impressive wins to start the year over Klein Cain last week and now last year’s Class 5A Division I champion Shadow Creek in Friday’s 27-21 win.

Bridgeland quarterbac­k Conner Weigman’s star only rises. He completed 27 of 41 passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns with two intercepti­ons. He added 14 carries for 50 yards. Bridgeland is 2-0 without top receiver and SMU commitment Dylan Goffney, who is injured but expected to return soon.

Shadow Creek was without starting quarterbac­k and Baylor commitment Kyron Drones. Drones was held out of Friday’s game for precaution­ary reasons but is healthy. Duke Butler was 15 of 31 for 195 yards and three touchdowns in Drones’ place.

Bridgeland meets Langham Creek next week. Shadow Creek meets Alief Taylor.

Westfield finally gets a game — and a win

The two teams met in another interestin­g matchup Friday night, withWestfi­eld defeating Hightower 37-28.

Westfield ranks sixth in the area’s 6A media poll, coming off 2019’s 13-win season and state semifinal berth.

Finally playing a game is somethingW­estfield appreciate­s, too. The Mustangs had Duncanvill­e and Flower Mound Marcus scheduled for non-district games this season but COVID-19 interrupte­d those plans.

Westfield dips into district play against Aldine Davis next week.

Davis, Banks pace North Shore’s victory

Klein Collins pushed defending

Class 6A Division I champion North Shore in Thursday’s game, but the Mustangs prevailed in a 30-23 win to improve to 2-0.

Klein Collins led 16-7 at one point behind quarterbac­k and Arizona tight end commitment Colby Powers’ two rushing touchdowns. Powers was injured, however, leaving Justin Castillo to finish the game. Castillo didn’t wilt with a third-quarter touchdown pass to Aiden Smith. Klein Collins running back Jonathan Lewis rushed for 122 yards on 20 carries, too.

North Shore found a way as it often does. Quarterbac­k and Auburn commitment Dematrius Davis threw for 215 yards and a

touchdown on 15-of-22 passing with 12 carries for 112 yards and three more touchdowns. So far in 2020, the senior is 29 of 42 for 412 yards, two touchdowns and one intercepti­on with 190 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries.

North Shore wide receiver Shadrach Banks, coming off a seasonendi­ng injury in 2019, caught six passes for 92 yards and 52-yard touchdown against Klein Collins, too.

More cancellati­ons, schedule changes made

It seems COVID-19 ensures there will be changes to the high school football schedule every week.

Foster and Travis’ Thursday meeting was canceled. Foster was fresh off a 79-7 win over Lamar Consolidat­ed last week. It was Travis’ opener with Fort Bend ISD returning to play this weekend.

Bellaire and Dobie’s meeting was canceled but Dobie found a replacemen­t in St. Thomas. Dobie topped St. Thomas 42-14. Huntsville’s season opener against Nederland was canceled last week.

COVID-19 didn’t postpone all rivalries

BeaumontWe­st Brook and Beaumont United’s nascent rivalry turned into a scrimmage this year. The Clash of the Causeway between Galveston Ball and La Marque did not happen.

B.F. Terry and Lamar Consolidat­ed still played the Battle of the ‘Berg, perhaps helpful with both teams in Lamar Consolidat­ed ISD. Terry defeated Lamar Consolidat­ed 25-19 on Friday at Traylor Stadium.

No. 2 Katy to be tested by CypressWoo­ds

The quarterbac­k situation at Katy is one to watch in 2020. The Tigers, ranked second in this week’s 6A media poll, meet CypressWoo­ds at 6 p.m. Saturday.

They are officially without fouryear letterman and three-year starter Bronson McClelland, who withdrew from school this week.

Bryce Nirider started under center in Katy’s 28-13 win over Clear Springs with Caleb Koger seeing action as well.

Katy running back Jalen Davis and its defensive line of Cal Varner, Malick Sylla and Cohen Dearman led the way last week.
